As I’m playing at Freqs of Nature Festival on the Relaxperimental stage, I took a look through the lineup and decided to make some short posts about some of the artists who are playing on the same stage.

From his bio:

Frank Bretschneider is a musician, composer and video artist in Berlin. His work is known for precise sound placement, complex, interwoven rhythm structures and its minimal, flowing approach.

Bretschneider began his musical exploration by experimenting with tape machines, synthesizers, and modified guitars. Eventually he would use his background in Fine Arts to combine visual art and music using film, video and computer graphics.

In 1995, Bretschneider and AG Geige member Olaf Bender founded the Rastermusic label. This label published about 20 releases between 1996 and 1998 which featured sound experiments using tape and radio. Notable output from this label are numerous releases from Carsten Nicolai’s noton moniker and also William Basinski’s shortwave music. The two labels Rastermusic and noton merged in 1999 to form raster-noton which has become a highly influential label pushing glitch and experimental electronic music into new territories and is a treasure trove of interesting electronic music.

Bretschneider released on labels including 12k, Line, Mille Plateaux or Shitkatapult with a notable audio-visual feast being his SUPER.TRIGGER release from 2013 on raster-noton. His video work in recent years has proven to display a harmonious balance of film and sound. Bretschneider’s newest Album LUNIK was released on February 16 via Shitkatapult and the following is a sample:

I look forward to seeing his performance this year and what kind of sounds he will be bringing to the stage.
